What is your story? Not a story about something that happened in the past, but a fast-forward tale about where your business will be in the future. This story will become the fundamental theme of your strategic plan.
Strategic plans are much more than a collection of missions, visions, and strategies. These are simply the elements that help you (the author) define a detailed path to your future for the reader (staff and other stakeholders).
Although the leaders of many businesses and nonprofit organizations understand the need to have a strategic plan, it is often left undone because – well frankly – strategic planning has a reputation for being a bit dull. Sure, for those of us who love strategy, its fun. But, for most business owners it’s simply a distraction, a luxury item, another consultant-for-hire waste of time and money.
So, don’t write a strategic plan – tell your story.
